I remove the skin of a blister, how do I keep it from getting infected?

In a stupid moment I decided it would be a good idea to cut the skin off of a blister on the ball of my foot. After I cut it, I looked online an it said you shouldn't take off that skin. I don't want it to get infected, I've already put antibiotic ointment on it and a bandaid. Will it get infected? Can Ido anything more to prevent the infection?
