Why does the USA have lesser restrictions on what can be shown on TV than Britain does?

Being an American, I can say American TV is definitely not as explicit as some British shows shown on tv. Plus Hour Television programs here are actually 42:00 - 45:00 minutes due to ads. We do block normal curse words such sh** Fu** bi*** ect...
